Workshop - “Bridging Aerosol Science and Respiratory Health: Challenges and Opportunities in Modelling Aerosols in the Lung”

Registration Fee: Free! Please register using the link above/below.

Workshop Summary

This workshop brings together clinical researchers, academic scientists, and industry partners to explore key challenges in understanding respiratory aerosols and their behaviour in the human lung. Applications range from inhaled drug delivery and the transmission of infectious diseases to the health impacts of air pollution. Through focused talks and collaborative discussion, we aim to identify the major unknowns in mathematically and computationally modelling aerosol transport, deposition, and clearance in respiratory pathways. The workshop will highlight how existing device technologies and measurement capabilities can inform and constrain modelling efforts, and it will lay the groundwork for future interdisciplinary research directions that advance both scientific understanding and practical healthcare outcomes.

Objectives

  • Knowledge exchange between groups working on modelling the behaviour of aerosols in the context of human health.

  • Identification of key gaps in current modelling capabilities and key opportunities for the use of computational modelling of aerosol for health applications.

  • Foster new multi-disciplinary collaborations between academia and industry to address these gaps and harness these opportunities.

Dr Mina Kim - Mapping lung function with advanced MRI methods for clinical translation.

We are delighted to invite you to the next webinar in our series where we will be joined by Dr Mina Kim, University College London. Details on our speaker can be found below.

Title: Mapping lung function with advanced MRI methods for clinical translation.

Abstract: Chronic lung diseases are a significant global health concern, causing ventilation obstruction, interstitial barrier dysfunction and potential irreversible damage. Existing clinical methods for diagnosis and monitoring suffer from restricted precision, subjectivity, and invasiveness. Functional lung imaging offers a promising solution to non-invasively characterise quantitative regional lung function and address these limitations. In this talk, I will present novel functional lung MRI methods with potential for clinical translation. Additionally, I will share my experiences and insights gained throughout the fellowship applications.
