Biophysical Modelling in Respiratory Medicine - Network Conference 2024


We are delighted to announce our annual conference will be a 2 day event held in Nottingham, UK. We warmly welcome participants from academia, industry and charity groups to join us for some fascinating research talks, networking sessions and panel discussions.

Where: Jubilee Conference Centre, Nottingham, UK

When: 10 - 11 January 2024

Registration deadline: Registration is now closed.

Accommodation and dinner: Optional accommodation is available at the Jubilee Hotel Conference Centre on the evening of 9th and 10th January for £75 per night.

An optional three course conference dinner will take place on the 10th January for £30.

Abstract submission

Abstract submission is now closed. Many thanks to those who have submitted an abstract to present at the conference. Those who applied in the second round will be notified by the 4th December whether they have chosen to be included in the programme.

BIOREME Travel support fund

BIOREME will support a limited number of researchers delivering an oral presentation to attend the event with bursaries of up to £200 available toward travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.

You will be informed on your outcome to the travel support fund alongside your abstract outcome.

Professor Martin Genet is a researcher in the MΞDISIM team, joint between the Solid Mechanics Laboratory or École Polytechnique and INRIA, the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology. His research focuses on applying physical modeling, data processing and computational techniques to challenges in cardiology and pulmonology. His research spans cardiac and pulmonary biomechanical modeling, simulation and estimation focusing on i) multiscale biomechanical modelling of living tissues ii) methods and tools for simulation of such models and iii) methods and tools for merging such models with clinical data.

Professor Jacky Smith leads a multi-disciplinary research team who focus on understanding mechanisms underlying pathological cough as well as in the measurement and monitoring of chronic cough. She is Director of the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility and an investigator in the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre.

Professor Martin Clift focuses upon the creation and application of advanced in vitro models of the human lung, accompanied with realistic exposure systems that enable his team to assess the hazard of inhaled particulate and fibres. Furthermore, this information enables his group to elucidate the mechanisms associated with the onset/exacerbation of respiratory diseases following such exposures. Martin is Chair of the UK Animal Alternative Technologies (UKAAT) society, a Full Member of the UK Government Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP), as well as holds varies committee and editorial functions in the UK and globally.

Simon Johnson is Respiratory Theme Lead for the Nottingham NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and Director of the National Centre for Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). His research focuses on how chronic lung diseases including LAM, asthma and lung fibrosis result in pathological lung parenchymal and airway remodelling and how these processes can be targeted to prevent organ failure and disability.

We will be hosting a panel session on “Opportunities and challenges for biophysical modelling in environmental health applications”. We will discuss key challenges and opportunities in this space and look forward to some interesting discussions which will help shape our new thematic area.
